Chapter 9 - The Last Betrayal Inside the Family

Roman gathered everyone.

Meera.

Evelyn.

His mother.

His trusted guards.

Even Nathaniel.

He wanted no secrets left.

One by one, the truth came out.

The Architect was not a single person.

It was a network.

A family network.

Roman's father.

His mother.

Evelyn.

Adrian.

Nathaniel.

Victor.

And people who had inherited pieces of their work.

They had all contributed.

Some willingly.

Some under threat.

Some believing they were protecting the family.

The final person responsible for the current attacks was someone Roman never suspected.

His mother.

Not because she wanted him dead.

Because she had been blackmailed.

Malcolm had threatened Meera and Evan long before Roman ever met them.

The reason the enemy always knew Meera's movements was because Roman's mother had been forced to provide information.

She had believed she could manipulate the enemy.

Instead, she had become their tool.

Roman was devastated.

“You could have told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“You let them watch her.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Roman shook his head.

“That word destroyed this family.”

His mother cried.

Then Evan walked over to her.

“Grandma?”

She looked up.

“It's okay.”

The room fell silent.

A six-year-old had forgiven her before Roman could.

Evan placed his drawing on her lap.

“You can tell the truth now.”

His mother began to cry.

She told them everything.

A warehouse.

A hidden account.

A server farm.

A final bomb.

The target was not Roman.

It was Blackwell headquarters.

The building would be destroyed during a public charity event.

Hundreds of people would be inside.

Roman immediately canceled the event.

But the enemy had anticipated that.

The explosives had already been planted.

Evan listened.

He pointed toward the east wall.

“There.”

The security team opened it.

A device.

Then another.

Then another.

Twenty-two bombs.

The timer showed eighteen minutes.

Roman's team began evacuating.

People ran.

Meera took children outside.

Roman stayed.

“I'll find the rest.”

Meera grabbed his hand.

“Come back.”

He looked at her.

“I will.”

“You'd better.”

He kissed her.

Then he ran.

Evan remained beside her.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Daddy will come back.”

Meera smiled.

“I know.”

Roman reached the final device.

It was beneath the foundation.

The same acoustic pattern Evan had heard at the elevator.

The same engineering.

The same hand.

Nathaniel stared at it.

“The Architect.”

Roman shook his head.

“No.”

Nathaniel looked confused.

Roman smiled grimly.

“The Architect isn't a person.”

He pointed at the system.

“It is the design.”

The enemy had replicated his father's architecture.

The bombs were connected to the building's emergency systems.

If Roman disabled them incorrectly, the structure would collapse.

He remembered Evan.

The boy always said:

“The elevator is lying.”

Machines could lie.

But sound could not.

Roman listened.

He heard nothing.

Then he realized.

He did not need to hear.

He needed to trust the person who could.

He called Meera.

“Put Evan on the phone.”

She did.

“Daddy?”

Roman smiled.

“Tell me which line sounds wrong.”

Evan listened through the phone to the audio feed.

Silence.

Then:

“Green.”

“What?”

“The green line.”

Roman checked.

The green cable was the decoy.

The blue line contained the actual trigger.

He disconnected it.

The timer stopped.

The bombs went dead.

Outside, police arrested the remaining conspirators.

Nathaniel surrendered.

Roman's mother cooperated.

Evelyn turned over everything.

The last criminal structure surrounding the Blackwell Group collapsed.

Months later, court proceedings began.

Roman testified.

Meera testified.

The evidence was overwhelming.

The family secrets became public.

Roman did not defend the past.

He admitted it.

He said the Black Crown had operated outside the law for decades.

He said he was ending it.

He then donated much of the recovered money to families who had been harmed by the organization.

The city changed how it saw him.

Some still called him a mafia boss.

Others called him a businessman.

Roman no longer cared.

He cared about one thing.

The future.

He proposed to Meera beneath the old oak tree behind the hotel.

Not with diamonds.

With a simple ring.

“I don't need you to become part of my world,” he told her.

“I want to become part of yours.”

Meera cried.

“Yes.”

Evan stood beside them.

“Does that mean I can call him Dad?”

Roman looked at the boy.

His throat tightened.

“Yes.”

Evan smiled.

“Okay, Dad.”

Roman laughed.

For a man who had once ruled through fear, the word felt more powerful than any title he had ever carried.

But one final envelope arrived.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Roman looked at it.

A family picture.

Him.

Meera.

Evan.

And someone else.

A little girl.

Roman stared.

Meera whispered:

“Who is she?”

May you like

On the back were four words.

ADRIAN LEFT YOU A DAUGHTER.
