Chapter 8 - The Shadow Who Watched Meera

Roman moved Meera and Evan into his private residence.
Not because he distrusted her.
Because the enemy already knew their routines.
Security footage showed the same gray sedan outside Meera's apartment six different nights.
No license plate.
No driver visible.
Roman tracked it.
It belonged to a shell company.
Owned by a woman named Nadia Vale.
Meera recognized the name.
“My former landlord.”
Roman frowned.
“You knew her?”
“She helped me find the apartment.”
“She knew your work schedule.”
“Yes.”
“She knew Evan.”
“Yes.”
Roman realized the surveillance began three years earlier.
Before Evan pressed the elevator button.
Before Roman met Meera.
The enemy had been watching them.
Nadia was brought in.
She confessed quickly.
She had been paid to report Meera's movements.
By whom?
Evelyn.
Roman froze.
His aunt looked horrified.
“I never ordered surveillance on her.”
Nadia shook her head.
“Then someone used your name.”
Roman understood.
The Architect had copied identities.
He had manipulated paperwork.
Security badges.
Financial accounts.
Even dead people's names.
He wasn't just a murderer.
He was a ghost inside systems.
Evan was the only person who could consistently detect the hidden machinery he installed.
Roman asked Meera:
“Did Ortega ever mention a man who designed the hotel?”
She shook her head.
“Not by name.”
“What did he say?”
“He called him the Watchmaker.”
Roman looked at Evelyn.
She whispered:
“Malcolm never controlled the Black Crown alone.”
Roman stared.
“Who was the Watchmaker?”
Evelyn answered:
“Roman's father.”
Roman froze.
Then she explained.
His father had created the original hidden architecture.
Secret passages.
Mechanical safes.
Emergency systems.
But after his death, someone continued improving them.
Someone who had access to his original blueprints.
Someone who knew Roman personally.
Roman checked old records.
One engineer remained.
Nathaniel Reed.
Missing for eighteen years.
Declared dead.
Roman searched.
He found a photograph.
Nathaniel stood beside a young Roman.
And beside him was Adrian.
The brothers were children.
Nathaniel had been their tutor.
Their father's engineer.
Their protector.
Their betrayer.
Roman confronted him in an abandoned train station.
Nathaniel was older.
He looked tired.
“I wondered when you'd find me.”
Roman aimed his weapon.
“You killed Adrian.”
Nathaniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
“Your father.”
Roman froze.
“He ordered the death.”
“Why?”
Nathaniel looked away.
“Because Adrian knew too much.”
Roman's hands shook.
“My father killed his own son.”
“He believed he was saving the family.”
Roman hated those words more than anything.
Again.
Protection.
Always protection.
Nathaniel continued.
“But Adrian survived.”
Roman stared.
“What?”
“He escaped.”
“Where is he?”
Nathaniel's eyes filled with tears.
“He died later.”
“Who killed him?”
Nathaniel whispered:
“Me.”
Roman nearly pulled the trigger.
“You.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always have a choice.”
Nathaniel closed his eyes.
“I thought he would expose everything.”
Roman lowered the gun.
“Where is his evidence?”
“Inside the hotel.”
“What?”
“The architect's room.”
They returned to the Blackwell headquarters.
Evan listened to the walls.
He pointed toward Roman's old office.
“Behind the clock.”
Roman moved it.
A panel opened.
Inside was a recording.
Adrian.
Older.
Alive.
His brother looked directly at the camera.
“Roman.”
Roman froze.
“If you're seeing this, I failed.”
“You did not fail,” Roman whispered.
Adrian continued.
“Our father created the Black Crown to protect us.”
“The criminal empire came later.”
“Victor changed it.”
“Malcolm expanded it.”
“And Nathaniel maintained it.”
“But none of them knew the final truth.”
Adrian leaned toward the camera.
“Our mother was the one who funded everything.”
Roman's breath stopped.
Their mother.
The woman he had just found.
The video continued.
“She did it because she thought the family would destroy itself.”
Adrian smiled sadly.
“You were always the one who could end it.”
The screen went black.
Roman sat down.
Meera touched his shoulder.
“You're not your father.”
He looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because when you had power, you chose to protect people instead of control them.”
Roman looked at Evan.
The boy was smiling.
The sound of the machines around them had changed.
There was peace.
At least for the moment.
Roman took Meera's hand.
“I love you.”
She looked surprised.
“You barely know me.”
“I know enough.”
She smiled through tears.
“I love you too.”
Then a gunshot shattered the window.
Everyone ducked.
A bullet struck the wall.
A second message appeared on the security screen.
THE ARCHITECT IS INSIDE YOUR FAMILY.
May you like
Roman looked at the faces around him.
And this time, he knew the danger was personal.
