Chapter 6 - The Blood Secret Beneath the Casino

Roman spent the next two days searching his father's records.

He found evidence of secret accounts dating back thirty years.

His father had been stealing from his own businesses.

Not for himself.

For an unknown beneficiary.

The beneficiary was listed only as A.B.

Roman thought of Adrian.

But Adrian had been innocent.

Then he saw another document.

A.B. was not a person.

It was a trust.

And the trust owned the Black Crown.

Roman had not inherited the company.

He had inherited control over a shell created by his father.

The true beneficiary was the Black family foundation.

And the foundation's trustees were Evelyn, Victor, and Roman's mother.

Roman stared.

His mother.

She had been dead for ten years.

Or so he believed.

Again.

Another lie.

Roman found her living in a nursing facility.

She was older.

Weak.

But conscious.

When Roman entered, she cried.

“My son.”

Roman stood across from her.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

His mother nodded.

“I wanted to protect you.”

Roman laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.”

She looked at him.

“Because everyone was afraid of your father.”

“What happened to Adrian?”

“He was taken away because your father wanted one heir.”

“Why?”

“Because he feared the family would split.”

Roman looked down.

“Did you know he survived?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Victor killed him?”

“No.”

“What were you protecting?”

She whispered:

“Evan.”

Roman looked confused.

“My mother.”

“No.”

She looked directly at Meera.

“The boy.”

Meera froze.

“What about him?”

Roman's mother explained.

Three years earlier, Ortega had discovered that Evan was not simply a random child with unusual hearing.

His father had been an engineer.

A brilliant engineer who had worked on the Black Crown's security system.

He died before Evan was born.

The father had designed a specialized acoustic detection system.

Evan inherited an extraordinary sensitivity to mechanical patterns from him.

Victor wanted to use Evan.

Not because he was dangerous.

Because he could detect hidden systems.

He could hear concealed machinery.

He was the one person capable of exposing the Black Crown's underground network.

Meera stared.

“You knew?”

Roman's mother nodded.

“Ortega asked me to protect you.”

Meera's eyes filled.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Victor was watching.”

Roman looked at Evan.

The little boy sat quietly drawing.

A picture of an elevator.

On the side he had written in crooked letters:

SAFE.

Roman crouched.

“Evan.”

The boy looked up.

“What?”

“Why did you press the button?”

Evan answered simply.

“Because you were going to fall.”

Roman smiled.

“You saved me.”

Evan shrugged.

“You saved Mommy.”

Roman looked at Meera.

Their eyes met.

There was a silence between them.

Not romantic yet.

Something more fragile.

Trust.

That night, Roman walked through the casino.

For the first time, he saw the building differently.

It wasn't an empire.

It was a maze.

A maze built by people who had confused control with protection.

He shut down every criminal operation.

Accounts were frozen.

Secret rooms were sealed.

Weapons were surrendered.

He ordered legitimate employees protected from retaliation.

He even fired several loyal men who had participated in the old system.

Some called him weak.

Others called him foolish.

Roman didn't care.

He had seen what the old world did to families.

He wanted something else.

A future.

Meera remained nearby.

Not because she owed him.

Because she had nowhere else to go yet.

Roman offered her a secure apartment.

She refused.

“I can take care of myself.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I don't want you taking care of everyone alone anymore.”

Meera looked at him.

“You're dangerous.”

“I know.”

“You scare people.”

“I know.”

“You're terrible at pretending you're normal.”

Roman smiled.

“I know that too.”

She laughed.

It was the first time he had heard her laugh.

That sound stayed with him.

The next morning, Evan walked into Roman's office carrying a toy car.

“Look.”

Roman looked.

“What?”

“It makes a bad sound.”

Roman listened.

Nothing.

Evan turned the wheels.

A faint scrape.

Roman couldn't hear it.

“What do you hear?”

“Metal.”

Roman picked up the car.

He opened the base.

A tiny tracking device was hidden inside.

His face changed.

“Where did you get this?”

“A man gave it to me yesterday.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Roman turned cold.

“Did he say anything?”

“He said to give it to you.”

“What else?”

“He said one thing.”

“What?”

“Your father wasn't the boss.”

Roman stared at him.

Then the office door opened.

Evelyn stood there.

Her face was pale.

“He found you.”

Roman looked at her.

“Who?”

May you like

Evelyn whispered:

“The real owner of the Black Crown.”
