Chapter 8 - The Daughter Dario Built From a Lie

Nobody trusted Viviana.
That fact was so obvious no one needed to say it.
She sat at the long table in Marco's study with three guards behind her and Alessio standing near the door.
Sofia sat across from her.
Marco remained at the head of the table.
The phone with Dario's message lay between them.
"The address is an old Vescari property in Sands Point," Viviana said. "My father used it when I was a child. It belonged to my grandmother, then disappeared into a holding company."
Marco studied her.
"Why give it to me?"
Viviana looked at him with swollen eyes.
"Because I heard what Salvatore said."
"You heard Dario too."
"I heard enough."
Her voice cracked.
She turned toward Sofia.
"Your father had proof? About Lorenzo?"
Sofia touched the medal.
"The ledger shows Lorenzo was meeting Salvatore. My father's recording says he was trying to document the Nero Crown network."
Viviana shook her head.
"My father told me Lorenzo was dragged out of a Bellini warehouse and shot. He made me visit the place every year on the anniversary."
Marco said nothing.
Viviana stared at the tabletop.
"I was eleven. He told me to remember the smell of the river. He told me the Bellinis had taken my brother, and one day I would be old enough to take something back."
Sofia watched her carefully.
For two years, that story had been Viviana's weapon.
It did not erase what she had done.
But it explained the shape of the blade.
Marco's voice remained hard.
"You still chose to hide cameras in my bedroom."
Viviana looked at him.
"Yes."
"You still helped Dominic arrange the ambush."
"Yes."
"You still removed the railing and told me to walk toward an open staircase."
Tears rolled down her face.
"Yes."
She did not say she was sorry.
Not yet.
Maybe she understood the word would be obscene if used too quickly.
Marco leaned back.
"Then do not confuse discovering your father lied with becoming innocent."
Viviana flinched.
"I don't."
Sofia looked at Marco.
His anger was controlled, but she could hear the wound beneath it.
He had loved Viviana.
Maybe not perfectly.
Maybe not wisely.
But enough to plan a marriage.
Betrayal did not stop hurting because a larger conspiracy explained it.
Viviana pushed the phone toward him.
"He wants me to come alone."
Alessio shook his head. "Absolutely not."
Viviana laughed bitterly. "You think I am trying to escape again?"
"I think you tried to kill my boss less than twenty-four hours ago."
"Fair."
The unexpected answer silenced him.
Viviana looked at Marco.
"Let me go to him."
"Why?"
"Because he will talk to me."
"And then?"
Her hands trembled.
"I ask him about Lorenzo."
Sofia said, "You already know the answer."
Viviana looked at her.
"No. I know what Salvatore said. I know what the ledger suggests. I need to hear my father choose the lie again when he knows I know."
Sofia understood that more than she wanted to.
She had spent fourteen years needing to know whether her father had left or been taken.
Truth was not always a fact.
Sometimes truth was the moment the person who lied could no longer control the story.
Marco stood.
"You are not going alone."
Viviana nodded. "I assumed."
"You will wear no wire unless you agree to it."
She looked surprised.
"You are asking?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Marco's expression was cold. "Because I am finished becoming the kind of man who thinks fear gives him ownership of everyone around him."
Sofia looked at him.
Viviana did too.
Then she nodded.
"I agree."
At 9:22 p.m., Salvatore called from the private hospital.
His voice was stronger after fluids and treatment.
Marco put the call on speaker.
"There is something else you need to know," Salvatore said.
Viviana stared at the phone.
"About Lorenzo?"
A long silence.
"Yes," Salvatore answered.
"Tell me."
"He came to me three times. The last time, he brought records. He wanted Dario stopped, not killed. He believed your father was becoming paranoid."
Viviana closed her eyes.
"Why did he want to protect me?"
"Because he loved you."
Her mouth trembled.
Salvatore continued.
"He said Dario had started telling you stories about loyalty and revenge when you were still a child. Lorenzo was afraid he was shaping you into someone who would never have a life outside his war."
Viviana covered her face.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then Salvatore said, "I failed him too."
Marco looked at the phone.
"Papa -"
"No. Let me say it. I believed I could control the meeting. I believed being Salvatore Bellini made me untouchable. Adriana warned Dario. Mateo warned me there was a leak, and I dismissed him because I thought my sister could never betray me. Lorenzo died because I trusted blood more than evidence. Mateo died because I made the same mistake again."
Sofia stared at the phone.
Salvatore's voice softened.
"Sofia, are you there?"
"Yes."
"I have owed you an apology since you were twelve years old."
Her eyes filled.
"You didn't kill my father."
"No. But I told him I could protect him. I failed."
Sofia took a breath.
"My father said in his letter not to blame you for the knife in his back."
Salvatore was silent.
"He said to blame you for believing blood makes men loyal."
A broken laugh came through the speaker.
"That sounds like Mateo."
"He also told me not to spend my life chasing his death."
"He was right about that too."
Sofia wiped a tear from her cheek.
"I know."
When the call ended, Viviana looked different.
Not redeemed.
Not forgiven.
Simply stripped of the story that had held her upright for most of her life.
At 10:05, she entered the Vescari property in Sands Point.
Marco, Sofia and Alessio watched from a secure room nearby through the signal Viviana had agreed to carry.
Dario met his daughter in a dim sitting room.
He looked older than his recording at the church.
More tired.
But when he saw Viviana, his face softened.
"Vivi."
She stopped ten feet from him.
"Did you kill Lorenzo?"
Dario's expression froze.
No greeting.
No embrace.
No time for his version of comfort.
Viviana asked again.
"Did you kill my brother?"
Dario's face hardened.
"Who told you that?"
"Answer me."
"Salvatore?"
"Answer me."
Dario turned away.
"Lorenzo betrayed us."
Viviana's breath caught.
"That is not what I asked."
Dario walked toward the window.
"He was going to hand everything to the Bellinis. He was going to destroy what I built."
Viviana began to cry.
"You told me Marco's father killed him."
"In every meaningful sense, he did. Salvatore corrupted him."
"Did you pull the trigger?"
Dario said nothing.
Viviana's voice broke.
"Did you?"
Finally, he turned.
"I gave the order."
Sofia closed her eyes.
Marco stared at the monitor.
Viviana seemed to fold inward.
"You made me hate them for fifteen years."
"Hatred kept you strong."
"You sent me into Marco's bed."
"You had a purpose."
"You told me he was a monster."
Dario laughed once. "He is a Bellini."
Viviana shook her head.
"He trusted me."
Dario stepped closer.
"And you used that trust. You did well until the maid interfered."
Sofia's face tightened.
Dario continued.
"Do not become sentimental now. We can still finish this. Dominic is lost, but that is manageable. Adriana is exposed, but she was always temporary. Marco's captains are divided. Salvatore is weak. Give me one clean opportunity and we end the Bellinis tonight."
Viviana looked at him.
"How?"
Dario smiled.
"Marco will come for you."
In the monitoring room, Alessio muttered, "He is right."
Marco ignored him.
Viviana asked, "And then?"
"We let the whole world see him fall."
Sofia went still.
Dario walked toward a table and opened a laptop.
On the screen were dozens of viewer windows and private connection channels.
"The livestream was never just surveillance," he said. "It was a demonstration. Men who have feared the Bellinis for twenty years paid to watch their king become helpless. They watched him sleep. They watched doctors guide him by the arm. They watched his fiancee lead him toward an open staircase."
Marco's face turned to stone.
Dario smiled.
"Tonight they will watch him come for the woman who betrayed him. Then they will watch him lose everything."
Viviana stared at the screen.
"You sold access to his humiliation."
"I sold certainty. Fear is expensive. Proof is priceless."
Sofia finally understood the terrifying secret behind the cameras.
Dario had not been spying for information alone.
He had created an audience.
He was selling Marco's vulnerability as entertainment and proof that the Bellinis could be destroyed.
Viviana whispered, "You are sick."
Dario slapped her.
The sound exploded through the monitoring room.
Marco stepped toward the door.
Sofia caught his sleeve.
"Wait."
His eyes flashed.
"He hit her."
"And he wants you angry."
Marco stopped.
Sofia held his gaze.
"Do not give him the version of you he planned for."
Marco breathed once.
Then twice.
He looked back at the monitor.
Dario was gripping Viviana's chin.
"You belong to me," he said.
Viviana stared at him through tears.
"No."
One word.
Dario released her.
Viviana stepped backward.
"Lorenzo tried to save me from you."
Dario's face changed.
"Lorenzo was weak."
"No. He was brave enough to leave."
Dario reached for her.
Viviana moved away.
Then she looked directly toward the small camera hidden in her clothing.
Not at Dario.
At Marco.
"Now," she said.
Alessio moved.
The team entered the property.
The next minutes were fast and loud but ended with no grand performance for Dario's paying audience.
His guards scattered when they realized the house was surrounded.
Viviana locked herself inside a side room until Marco reached her.
Dario escaped through a rear passage before Alessio could close it.
Again.
But this time he left something behind.
The laptop.
On its screen, dozens of remote viewers were still connected.
Marco stepped in front of the camera.
Sofia stood behind him.
For a second, the watchers saw exactly what Dario had promised: Marco Bellini under harsh light, injured eye visible, the maid who had ruined the staircase plan at his side.
Marco removed his glasses.
"You paid to watch a blind man fall," he said.
The viewer count began dropping.
"You paid because Dario Vescari promised you proof that weakness makes a man easy to destroy."
More viewers disconnected.
Marco's voice stayed calm.
"Here is the proof you actually bought. Dario lied to his daughter. He murdered his son. He sold his allies to one another. He ran from my father, ran from my house and ran from this room."
Sofia watched the remaining windows disappear.
Marco leaned closer to the camera.
"And every record on this machine is now evidence."
He closed the laptop.
The livestream ended.
Alessio looked at him.
"We have connection records, payment accounts, names. Enough to destroy the Nero Crown network financially."
Marco nodded.
Viviana sat on the sofa, holding one hand to her bruised cheek.
She looked at Marco.
"You could keep those names for yourself. Use them."
Marco stared at the closed laptop.
The old Marco might have.
Information was power.
Secrets were currency.
But he could already see where that road ended.
A father imprisoned nine years.
A son dead.
A maid's father murdered.
A daughter turned into a weapon.
A cousin willing to kill for a chair at the table.
Marco looked at Alessio.
"Make copies for our attorneys. Then turn the material over to the appropriate authorities through counsel. Everything tied to Vescari. Everything tied to the surveillance."
Alessio blinked.
"Everything?"
"Everything."
Viviana stared at him.
Sofia did too.
May you like
Marco put his dark glasses back on.
"I am done building safety out of secrets."
