Chapter 3 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

At 9:04 p.m., the Bellini mansion went dark.

Not dim.

Dark.

The emergency lights should have activated instantly.

They did not.

A woman screamed somewhere in the east wing.

Marco heard guards shouting into radios.

Then three sharp impacts struck the exterior windows of the study.

Alessio shoved Marco down behind the desk.

"Stay low!"

Sofia dropped beside him.

Viviana moved in the darkness.

A guard grabbed her before she reached the door.

"Do not let her out!" Alessio shouted.

The mansion's backup generator finally roared to life, flooding the hallways with low amber emergency light.

Marco lifted his head.

The study windows were intact. The impacts had not been bullets.

Small metal cylinders lay outside on the terrace, releasing thick gray smoke.

A diversion.

Alessio's radio crackled.

"Chief, south gate breach. Two vehicles. Security cameras down."

Another voice cut in.

"Fire in the service wing."

Then another.

"Library guard is not responding. Dominic is gone."

Marco's expression hardened.

Viviana smiled from the chair where a guard held her.

"Ten o'clock was generous."

Marco looked at the clock.

9:06.

"Your father changed the schedule?"

"My father never trusted schedules."

Sofia stared at her.

"You knew people were coming."

"I knew they would not leave me here."

Marco stood.

Alessio blocked him. "Boss, the west corridor is not secure."

"Then secure it."

"Your eye -"

"Is attached to me, Alessio. Move."

Sofia rose too.

Marco turned on her.

"You stay here."

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Sofia's voice shook, but she did not lower it.

"Whoever came here knows I found the cameras. If I stay alone in a room while your people are fighting somewhere else, I become the easiest person in this house to silence."

Marco started to argue.

Then stopped.

She was right.

"Stay behind me."

Sofia frowned. "You can barely see depth in emergency lighting."

"Then stay beside me."

That, she accepted.

They moved into the corridor with four guards.

Smoke seeped from the far end of the mansion, but no flames were visible. The service-wing fire was another distraction, controlled enough to spread panic but not yet destroy the building.

They reached the central gallery.

A guard came running from the library.

"Dominic's gone. One of our men was found unconscious in the coat closet. His uniform is missing."

Marco understood immediately.

Dominic had not escaped despite the breach.

He had escaped because someone inside had prepared for it.

"Lock the interior gates," Marco said. "He may still be in the house."

Sofia touched his arm.

"Wait."

Marco turned.

She was looking at the floor.

A thin trail of water crossed the marble.

"The service elevator," she said.

Alessio looked confused.

Sofia pointed. "The catering staff cleaned that elevator at six. The floors were dry. Those marks are wet shoe prints."

Marco followed the trail with his good eye.

It led not toward an exit, but toward the old wine cellar stairs.

Alessio signaled two guards ahead.

They descended.

The cellar smelled of oak, stone and smoke filtering through the ventilation system.

At the far end, one wine rack stood crooked.

Marco remembered the hidden passage before anyone said it.

His grandfather had built it during a federal investigation decades earlier. Marco had sealed it after inheriting the mansion.

Or thought he had.

The rack swung open.

Behind it was a narrow concrete corridor.

A man in a stolen guard uniform lay unconscious ten feet inside.

Dominic was not there.

Alessio swore.

"This tunnel exits near the old boathouse."

Marco looked at Sofia.

"How did you know?"

"I didn't. I followed the water."

He almost smiled despite the crisis.

They moved through the tunnel.

Halfway down, Marco's injured vision failed him.

The dim lights doubled. The floor seemed to tilt.

He stopped.

Sofia noticed immediately.

"Marco."

It was the first time she had used his name.

He looked at her.

"Your left side," she said quietly. "The wall is closer than it looks. Give me your hand."

He hated needing help.

He hated it even more because Viviana had used that need against him.

For one second, he could not move.

Sofia understood.

"I am not going to let go."

The words were simple.

They cut through something inside him.

Marco gave her his hand.

She guided him through the narrowest section of tunnel.

Not like Viviana had guided him toward the staircase.

Sofia warned him before every change in level.

"One step down."

Then later, "Two steps up."

Never too late.

Never vaguely.

Every word exact.

By the time they reached the boathouse, Marco's anger had become colder than fear.

The door stood open to the wind coming off Long Island Sound.

A black SUV was speeding away along the service road.

Dominic was gone.

Alessio raised his radio.

Marco stopped him.

"No chase."

Alessio stared. "Boss?"

"They want us scattered. We stay together. Track the road cameras beyond the property and let them think they succeeded."

Sofia looked toward the dark water.

"What now?"

Marco turned back toward the mansion.

"Now we find out what Dominic was supposed to steal."

They returned to the study at 9:38.

The fire had been contained. The power was stable again. Viviana remained under guard.

Marco went straight to the wall safe.

The office camera had been aimed directly at it.

He entered the combination himself.

Inside were cash reserves, passports, property documents and encrypted drives.

Nothing appeared missing.

Then Sofia pointed toward the upper shelf.

"That folder."

A thin red leather folder sat slightly crooked.

Marco pulled it out.

Empty.

His face changed.

Alessio said, "What was in it?"

Marco did not answer immediately.

Sofia waited.

Finally he said, "My father's private ledger."

Alessio went pale.

"I thought that was destroyed."

"No."

"What was in it?"

Marco looked toward Viviana.

She smiled.

"Everything," she said.

Marco's father had kept a handwritten record of every secret alliance, debt, payoff, hidden ownership structure and emergency agreement created during his years as head of the Bellini organization.

Most of it was obsolete.

Some of it was not.

In the wrong hands, it could shatter alliances, trigger investigations, bankrupt legitimate companies and turn old friends into enemies overnight.

But that was not what frightened Marco most.

The last section contained names.

People inside the Bellini family suspected of working for Dario Vescari before Dario's supposed death.

Including the person Mateo Ramirez had tried to expose.

Sofia's father.

Her search.

The missing ledger connected everything.

Marco turned toward Viviana.

"Your father wants the names."

"My father already knows most of them."

"Then what does he want?"

She leaned forward.

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

Viviana's eyes moved toward Sofia.

"That the Bellinis murdered the wrong man fifteen years ago."

Sofia stiffened.

Marco felt something dark settle in his chest.

"Who?"

Viviana smiled.

"Ask him."

"Ask who?"

"Your father."

Marco stared at her.

His father, Salvatore Bellini, had been dead for nine years.

Viviana watched his face.

Then she laughed softly.

"You still don't know."

Marco's voice dropped.

"Know what?"

Viviana leaned back.

"Salvatore Bellini did not die nine years ago."

Sofia looked at Marco.

Alessio's face had gone white.

Marco did not move.

"That is a lie."

"Is it?"

"I saw his body."

"You saw a closed casket after a fire."

Marco remembered smoke. A burned warehouse. A funeral attended by hundreds. His mother weeping. Alessio standing at his shoulder. Dominic placing a hand on his back and saying, You are the head now.

Viviana's voice softened.

"Dario kept your father alive because dead men cannot answer questions."

Marco's hands curled into fists.

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

He stepped closer.

"Where?"

"I said I don't know. Dario moved him years ago. Only Dominic knows the current location."

Sofia looked toward the empty red folder.

"Then Dominic didn't steal the ledger only for power. He stole it because it tells him something about where Salvatore might be."

Viviana looked at her with reluctant respect.

"Smart maid."

Sofia's eyes hardened.

"Wrong woman to underestimate."

Marco turned away.

The room seemed too small.

His father alive.

His fiancee the daughter of an enemy believed dead.

His cousin a traitor.

His home wired with cameras.

And Sofia, the maid everyone had ignored, stood at the center of the only chain of truth he could still trust.

Alessio's radio crackled again.

"Chief, we picked up a vehicle matching Dominic's SUV on Route 25A. It stopped at an abandoned church outside Huntington."

Marco looked up.

Viviana smiled.

"Do not go."

Marco turned toward her.

"Why?"

Her face changed.

For the first time since revealing her identity, the fear looked genuine.

"Because that is not where Dominic is hiding."

"Then what is it?"

Viviana whispered, "An invitation."

A second later, a guard entered carrying a plain white envelope found beneath the mansion's front gate.

Marco opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An older man sat tied to a chair beneath a single hanging light.

His hair was gray.

His face was thinner.

But Marco knew him instantly.

Salvatore Bellini.

Alive.

May you like

On the back of the photograph, three words were written in black ink.

BRING THE MAID.
