Chapter 7 - The Rooftop Where Everything Changed

Midnight came with another storm.
Vincent went to the rooftop alone.
Elena stayed in the vehicle below with Rafael.
She wore a bulletproof vest beneath her coat.
She hated it.
But she wore it.
Vincent walked into the rain.
Adrian stood beside the ledge.
“You came.”
“Where's Grant?”
“Gone.”
“Where's Elena's sister?”
“Safe.”
Vincent stopped.
“You expect me to believe you?”
“No.”
Adrian held out a small drive.
“Your father left this for you.”
Vincent didn't take it.
“Why now?”
“Because you finally became willing to listen.”
Vincent's eyes hardened.
“What happened to your conscience?”
Adrian smiled sadly.
“It died a long time ago.”
He explained.
Years ago, the organization had begun as a legitimate protection network.
Then greed took over.
People became assets.
Information became currency.
And families were threatened into silence.
Vincent's father had tried to stop it.
Adrian betrayed him.
Not for money.
For power.
Vincent listened.
Then asked:
“Why Elena?”
“Because her father hid the master ledger inside her memory.”
Vincent frowned.
“She doesn't remember.”
“She doesn't have to.”
Adrian pointed to Elena's childhood photograph.
“Her father taught her a sequence as a game.”
Vincent understood.
“The knocks.”
“Yes.”
Elena knew the combination without knowing she knew it.
Adrian continued.
“The ledger can't be opened without her.”
A voice behind him spoke.
“You're lying.”
Elena stepped onto the rooftop.
Vincent spun.
“Elena!”
She stood in the rain.
Rafael shouted from the stairwell.
She had followed.
Adrian smiled.
“Exactly.”
Elena stared.
“What do you want?”
“The ledger.”
“I don't have it.”
“You are it.”
He pulled out a gun.
Vincent moved.
A shot fired.
Vincent shoved Elena aside.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
Elena screamed.
Adrian ran.
Rafael chased him.
Vincent fell to one knee.
Elena knelt beside him.
“You're bleeding.”
“It's not fatal.”
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
“You're impossible.”
He smiled.
“You came.”
“Of course I came.”
She tore her scarf and pressed it to the wound.
Vincent looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because you came for me.”
He stared at her.
Rain ran down her face.
“You know what Grant used to tell me?”
“What?”
“That no one would ever protect me for free.”
Vincent's voice softened.
“I don't want payment.”
“I know.”
He touched her cheek.
She froze.
The city glittered beneath them.
For a second, the danger disappeared.
Then Elena kissed him.
It wasn't planned.
It wasn't careful.
It was desperate and honest.
When they pulled apart, Vincent stared at her.
“That was a terrible time.”
She almost smiled.
“Then survive.”
“I intend to.”
Rafael returned.
“Adrian escaped.”
Vincent stood despite the pain.
“Then we finish this.”
But Adrian had already activated the final phase.
Every news station in New York received the same anonymous package.
Photographs.
Financial records.
Names.
And one accusation.
VINCENT MORETTI IS THE MASTERMIND.
Elena stared at the television.
“No.”
Vincent watched the headlines.
They were framing him.
The public saw a crime boss.
A powerful businessman.
A man with every reason to control the city.
Adrian had created the perfect narrative.
By sunrise, federal agents surrounded the Moretti estate.
Vincent looked at Elena.
“They want me.”
She shook her head.
“They want the ledger.”
He nodded.
“And you.”
May you like
She took his hand.
“Then we give them the truth.”
