Chapter 5 - The Safe Behind the Wall

Room 3107 no longer existed on the hotel's public floor plan.

But Vincent had access to the original architectural records.

A forgotten service corridor led to it.

They entered at midnight.

The room smelled of dust.

A cracked fireplace stood against one wall.

Vincent tapped the stone.

Nothing.

Elena remembered her father.

He used to knock three times whenever he wanted her attention.

She tapped the wall.

Three times.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a steel safe.

Her father's initials were carved into it.

V.V.

Vincent handed her the brass key.

“Your choice.”

She looked at him.

“You're really letting me do this?”

“Yes.”

She inserted it.

The safe opened.

Inside were documents.

A hard drive.

Photographs.

And a letter addressed to Elena.

Her hands trembled.

She opened it.

My little girl,

If you are reading this, I failed to protect you.

Elena cried silently.

Her father explained everything.

He had discovered that several wealthy businessmen were buying distressed properties and secretly using them to disappear vulnerable families.

He had traced the money.

The trail led to Grant Mercer.

But deeper in the records was another network.

Mercer was only one branch.

The real operation was controlled by people who used private security companies, charitable foundations, and political donors as cover.

At the bottom of the letter, one sentence stood alone.

DO NOT TRUST POWER. TRUST EVIDENCE.

Vincent looked at the hard drive.

“That's what they want.”

Elena nodded.

“That's why they followed me.”

“Not just you.”

He looked at the letter.

“Your father knew about my family.”

“How?”

“He mentioned my father by name.”

Elena looked at him.

“What did he say?”

Vincent read.

“Antonio Moretti helped me protect the first witnesses.”

Silence.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't anyone tell you?”

“Because he died before he could.”

Elena touched the letter.

“He wasn't killed by Grant.”

“No.”

Vincent looked toward the hallway.

“He was killed by someone closer.”

The lights went out.

A gunshot exploded.

Vincent pulled Elena down.

Rafael returned fire.

Someone ran.

They chased him through the corridor.

The attacker escaped through a service door.

But he dropped something.

A silver cuff link.

Vincent picked it up.

The initials read G.M.

Grant Mercer.

Elena stared.

“It's his.”

Vincent shook his head.

“Too obvious.”

Then another sound came from the safe room.

A phone ringing.

Elena answered.

Grant's voice filled the dark.

“Did you like your father's letter?”

She froze.

“How do you have this number?”

“I have everything.”

Vincent took the phone.

“You're finished.”

Grant laughed.

“You still think this is about Elena.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“What is it about?”

“Your father.”

The call ended.

Vincent stood still.

Elena touched his arm.

“Are you okay?”

He looked at her.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I just realized Grant isn't the man behind this.”

“Then who is?”

May you like

Vincent stared at the hard drive.

“My father's oldest friend.”
