Chapter 9 - The Wedding Ring I Had Never Expected to Give Elena

Months passed.
The Moretti organization changed.
Some businesses closed.
Others became legitimate.
The criminal empire my father had built slowly disappeared.
I sold properties connected to corruption.
Paid restitution where possible.
Turned several warehouses into community food centers.
And the restaurant chain funded shelters for women escaping abusive homes.
Elena helped organize them.
She had always wanted to help women who had no one.
Mia still stole strawberries.
Still called herself Boss.
Still considered my office her personal kingdom.
And every Friday afternoon, she demanded five minutes in my chair.
“You're getting better,” I told her.
“I know.”
She nodded seriously.
One evening I returned home early.
Elena was in the garden.
Mia was chasing butterflies.
I watched them from the terrace.
For most of my life, I believed power meant never needing anyone.
I was wrong.
Elena had shown me that strength could look like surviving.
Mia had shown me that courage could fit inside pink sneakers.
And somehow, those two people had changed everything.
I walked toward Elena.
She smiled.
“You're home early.”
“I have something for you.”
I reached into my pocket.
She frowned.
“What is that?”
I pulled out a ring.
Her eyes widened.
“Luca.”
“I know.”
She stared.
“Mia helped me choose it.”
From behind a tree came a little voice.
“I picked the sparkly one.”
Elena laughed.
I took her hand.
“I don't have a perfect past.”
She smiled.
“I know.”
“I don't promise a life without danger.”
“I know.”
“But I promise you'll never have to face it alone.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And Mia?”
“She already owns me.”
Mia jumped out.
“I heard that.”
Elena laughed.
I knelt.
“Will you marry me?”
She covered her mouth.
Then looked at Mia.
Mia nodded.
“Say yes.”
Elena laughed through her tears.
“Yes.”
Mia screamed.
The sound carried across the garden.
That night we celebrated with pizza because Mia refused anything else.
Vincent came.
Daniel came with his wife.
Isabella came.
Even my mother came.
For the first time, everyone sat at the same table without weapons.
It felt strange.
Beautiful.
After dinner, Vincent pulled me aside.
“You're different.”
“So are you.”
“I never thought I'd see the day you'd choose family over power.”
“I never thought I had a choice.”
He smiled.
“You always did.”
Then he handed me an envelope.
Inside was a letter from my father.
Luca,
If you are reading this, then you survived what I could not.
I spent my life building walls around our family.
You were always the one meant to tear them down.
Do not inherit my fear.
Build something kinder.
Something that survives without blood.
I hope you found the courage to choose love.
I folded the letter.
My eyes burned.
Elena came beside me.
“What is it?”
I gave it to her.
She read it.
Then held my hand.
“You did.”
“Did what?”
“Built something kinder.”
I looked around.
Mia was dancing with Isabella.
Daniel was laughing.
Vincent was arguing with my mother about dessert.
And Elena was beside me.
For the first time, my house felt like a home.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Luca Moretti.”
A woman's voice spoke.
“Your father would be proud.”
I frowned.
“Who is this?”
“Someone who remembers.”
The call ended.
I looked at Elena.
She saw my expression.
“What happened?”
I smiled.
“Nothing.”
Because unlike before, I wasn't afraid of the past.
May you like
I knew who stood beside me.
And that changed everything.
