Chapter 7 - The Night the City Turned Against the Raven

By morning, the entire city was talking.

News stations showed financial documents.

Journalists displayed bank transfers.

Prosecutors announced investigations.

Politicians denied everything.

Police commanders resigned.

The Raven Circle began to fracture.

Gabriel Cross responded with violence.

Three warehouses burned.

Two journalists were attacked.

A prosecutor disappeared.

And then he made his biggest mistake.

He came after Lily.

The school she attended after we moved her into protective custody was surrounded by black vehicles.

But Gabriel had underestimated my people.

Victor had doubled security.

Adrian had placed observers across the neighborhood.

And Sofia had personally accompanied Lily.

When the attackers arrived, they found an empty classroom.

Lily was already gone.

We moved her to my mother's house in the countryside.

For the first time in days, she laughed.

She chased chickens across the yard.

My mother watched from the porch.

Sofia cooked dinner.

Adrian repaired an old fence.

I stood back and watched them.

This was what I had been fighting for without knowing its name.

Family.

That night, Lily approached me.

“Uncle Dante?”

“Yes?”

“Are you still a bad man?”

I smiled.

“I don't know.”

She frowned.

“Mommy says people can change.”

“She does.”

“Grandma says you can.”

I looked at the farmhouse.

“What do you think?”

Lily considered it.

“You were scary before.”

“Before?”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“You're still scary.”

I laughed.

“But you're my scary uncle.”

For the first time in years, I laughed without bitterness.

Then the lights went out.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Adrian shouted.

“Get down!”

We moved Lily to the basement.

Victor sealed the doors.

My mother grabbed Sofia's hand.

I looked at the security monitors.

Twenty vehicles.

Too many.

“It's Gabriel.”

Adrian nodded.

“He wants the archive.”

I shook my head.

“He wants Lily.”

We moved through the tunnels beneath the property.

The attackers entered the house.

They found no one.

We emerged behind the barn.

But Gabriel had anticipated the tunnels.

His men were waiting.

A fight broke out.

I was hit in the shoulder.

Adrian took down two men.

Victor was stabbed.

Sofia pulled Lily behind a truck.

Then I saw Gabriel.

He stood across the field in a black coat.

For a moment, everything became still.

He smiled.

“Dante.”

I walked toward him.

“You've lost.”

“Not yet.”

He pointed at Lily.

“You know what she inherited.”

“I know.”

“The Cross blood.”

“Her father rejected you.”

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“Her father betrayed his family.”

“He protected his daughter.”

Gabriel raised his gun.

I stepped between them.

“Kill me.”

He smiled.

“You think I won't?”

“Do it.”

He stared at me.

Then lowered the gun.

“No.”

He turned.

“Take the girl.”

His men moved.

I charged.

The field erupted.

I fought until my injured shoulder went numb.

Then a vehicle crashed through the gate.

Police.

But not Gabriel's police.

Federal agents.

The files had reached the right people.

Investigators surrounded the property.

Gabriel escaped through the woods.

But several of his senior commanders were arrested.

The city changed in one night.

His empire collapsed.

Mine could have too.

Instead, I made a decision.

I dissolved it.

Every illegal operation.

Every hidden account.

Every smuggling route.

Everything.

Marco thought I was insane.

“You've spent twenty years building this.”

“I know.”

“You'll lose millions.”

“I don't care.”

“What will you do?”

I looked at Lily.

“Something worth keeping.”

We converted legitimate assets into businesses.

Repair shops.

Restaurants.

Warehouses.

Construction companies.

A foundation.

Employment programs.

Medical support.

My mother insisted on helping.

Sofia opened a rehabilitation center for women escaping organized crime.

Adrian took over legal logistics operations.

Victor, after recovering, became head of security for the foundation.

Marco became my business partner.

The transformation took months.

But Gabriel Cross remained free.

Then one morning, I received an envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Gabriel standing beside a hospital bed.

My mother.

The message was simple.

Come to the old Romano estate.

Alone.

I knew it was a trap.

But I also knew I had to finish it.

I told Sofia.

She shook her head.

“No.”

“He'll keep coming.”

“We can protect you.”

“This isn't about me.”

“What then?”

“It's about ending what started thirty years ago.”

My mother touched my arm.

“Your father went there too.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“He died at that house.”

The next morning, I drove to the ruins.

The old home had been burned down.

Only part of the stone foundation remained.

Gabriel was waiting.

Beside him stood a man I had never seen.

An elderly man.

I knew him immediately.

Carlo Bellini.

Alive.

He was seventy-eight.

He looked at me.

“You have your father's eyes.”

I raised my weapon.

“You destroyed my family.”

Carlo shook his head.

“No.”

He smiled.

“I revealed what your father was hiding.”

“What?”

“The archive was never about criminals.”

“Then what was it about?”

Carlo pointed to the foundation.

“Your father's money came from the government.”

I stared.

He continued.

“Black operations.”

My family had once been connected to a secret network.

The money.

The influence.

The people my father had controlled.

Everything had been built through covert deals.

My father wanted out.

Gabriel wanted control.

Carlo wanted survival.

And I had inherited the consequences.

Gabriel laughed.

“Now you know.”

I looked at Carlo.

“Why did you keep my mother alive?”

“Because Elena was useful.”

My hand tightened.

“She was never yours to control.”

Carlo smiled.

“She survived because I needed her.”

“For what?”

He pointed at Lily.

“Her bloodline.”

I understood.

The Cross family had feared that Lily would inherit evidence.

Her father had hidden the final key in her possession.

The pendant wasn't enough.

The real key was something Lily carried without knowing.

A small scar behind her ear.

A mark matching the symbol of the Raven Circle.

I stared at it.

Gabriel smiled.

“The key was tattooed into the child.”

I stepped forward.

“You will never touch her.”

Gabriel raised his weapon.

Then Carlo did something unexpected.

He shot Gabriel.

The bullet hit his chest.

Gabriel collapsed.

Carlo looked at me.

“You think I did this for you?”

“No.”

“I did it because he betrayed me too.”

Before I could respond, federal agents stormed the property.

Carlo was arrested.

Gabriel was taken to the hospital under guard.

And the thirty-year war finally ended.

But one mystery remained.

My mother's final question.

May you like

What had my father hidden?

The answer was buried beneath the house.
