Chapter 9 - The Man Behind the Family

Gabriel Mercer owned a historic estate near Cold Spring.

Publicly, he was a philanthropist.

A retired logistics executive.

A donor to hospitals, police foundations, and universities.

He had attended Carlo Morelli’s funeral.

He had sent Luca a handwritten condolence letter.

He had also been present at Dante’s christening.

“That’s why my father trusted him,” Dante said as the convoy moved north.

Hannah sat beside him.

“Why would he target your mother?”

“Money first. Power after.”

Marco passed a tablet from the front seat.

“We traced Bell’s shell payments. Mercer controlled the parent accounts through a charitable foundation.”

Dante’s face became unreadable.

“He used our routes.”

“Yes.”

“And when my mother found out—”

“He ordered the attack.”

Hannah touched Dante’s hand.

He did not pull away.

They had one advantage.

Mercer did not know the microSD card had uploaded automatically to a secure backup before it was stolen.

Marco found the cloud sync twenty minutes earlier.

They had Celeste’s files.

They had names.

They had enough evidence to destroy Mercer politically, financially, and legally.

But Luca was still in his hands.

That meant nothing else mattered yet.

A message arrived.

Dante’s phone.

One address.

One instruction.

COME ALONE.

Hannah read it.

“No.”

Dante looked at her.

“He has Luca.”

“He expects you to panic.”

“He knows me.”

“He knows the old version of you.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

Hannah continued.

“He expects the man who thinks he has to save everyone alone.”

Silence.

Marco looked back.

“She’s right.”

Dante frowned.

Marco shrugged.

“I’m allowed one opinion per year.”

Despite everything, Hannah nearly smiled.

The plan changed.

Dante would go in.

But not alone.

Morelli teams would take positions outside.

DeLuca men, now fully allied after the truth emerged, would block the road.

Federal contacts named in Celeste’s files had been avoided.

Instead, one trusted state investigator Isabella knew was given a copy.

If they did not leave the property within forty minutes, the evidence would be released to multiple news organizations.

Dante hated every part of the plan.

That was how Hannah knew it was good.

At 11:43 P.M., he walked into Gabriel Mercer’s estate.

Hannah remained in the second vehicle with Marco.

For seven minutes, nothing happened.

Then her phone rang.

Dante.

She answered.

No one spoke.

She heard voices.

Mercer’s.

“You look like your father when you’re angry.”

Dante’s voice was cold.

“Where is Luca?”

“Safe.”

“Let me see him.”

“You have something I want.”

“The files?”

“The copies.”

“Already distributed.”

Silence.

Then Mercer laughed.

“Carlo would be proud.”

Dante said, “He wasn’t proud of you.”

The line went quiet.

Hannah’s chest tightened.

Mercer said, “Your father was weak at the end.”

“My father found you.”

“Too late.”

“You poisoned him.”

“I corrected a problem.”

Hannah closed her eyes.

Confession.

Recorded.

Marco nodded.

They had it.

Dante said, “And my mother?”

Mercer’s voice changed.

“She was stubborn.”

Dante’s breathing came through the phone.

Hannah whispered, though he could not hear her, “Stay with me.”

Mercer continued.

“She could have walked away.”

“You ran her off the road.”

“I gave an order.”

“And found her at the clinic.”

“She left me no choice.”

Dante’s voice became quieter.

“There is always a choice.”

Hannah heard movement.

Then Luca’s voice.

“Dante!”

Dante’s breathing broke.

Mercer laughed.

“There. The famous weakness.”

Dante said, “Let him go.”

“Give me the backup.”

“No.”

A pause.

Hannah’s heart slammed.

Mercer said, “You would risk him?”

“No.”

“Then—”

“I would risk you.”

Silence.

Dante continued.

“You built everything on one assumption. That fear makes people obedient.”

Mercer said nothing.

“My father feared scandal, so he hid my mother’s death. Bell feared for his family, so he betrayed mine. Vittorio feared losing power, so he kept secrets. And I feared losing Luca so much I nearly turned him into a prisoner.”

Luca was crying.

Hannah could hear it.

Dante said, “But fear only works while people believe surrender will save them.”

Mercer’s voice sharpened.

“You think you’re clever.”

“No.”

Dante’s tone was calm.

“I think I’m done surrendering.”

The lights in Mercer’s estate went out.

This time, it was the Morellis who cut power.

Marco opened the vehicle door.

“Move.”

Everything happened fast.

Teams entered from two sides.

Hannah stayed behind the stone wall exactly as ordered for once in her life.

Gunfire cracked from inside.

She flinched.

Then another shot.

Then silence.

Too much silence.

Her phone disconnected.

“Dante?”

Nothing.

She called again.

No answer.

Marco disappeared inside.

Hannah waited thirty seconds.

Forty.

Fifty.

She could not.

She ran.

A guard tried to stop her.

She slipped past.

Inside, the entry hall was full of smoke from a flash device.

She heard shouting upstairs.

Then Luca.

“Hannah!”

She followed the voice.

A bedroom door stood open.

Luca was on the floor, hands bound.

Hannah rushed to him.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Where is Dante?”

Luca pointed toward the hall.

“He went after Mercer.”

Hannah cut the ties with a knife someone had dropped.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Luca.”

“You sound like him.”

“Good. Stay.”

She ran.

At the end of the hall, a door opened onto a balcony.

Dante stood near the railing.

Gabriel Mercer faced him with a gun.

Dante’s weapon lay ten feet away.

Hannah stopped behind the doorway.

Mercer smiled.

“You always were emotional.”

Dante’s face was calm.

“No.”

“You came for the boy.”

“Yes.”

“You came for revenge.”

“No.”

Mercer laughed.

“What, then?”

Dante looked at him.

“To end this.”

Mercer raised the gun.

Hannah’s breath stopped.

A shot exploded.

Mercer jerked.

The weapon fell.

He collapsed.

Marco stood behind him.

“I was getting tired of the speech.”

Dante exhaled.

Hannah nearly laughed and cried at once.

Then Luca ran onto the balcony.

“Dante!”

Dante turned.

His brother hit him at full speed.

Dante wrapped both arms around him.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he looked over Luca’s shoulder.

His eyes found Hannah.

Everything in his face changed.

Relief.

Love.

Fear.

All of it.

He held out one hand.

Hannah crossed the balcony.

Dante pulled her into the embrace with Luca.

Three people.

None of them safe forever.

None of them guaranteed anything.

But together.

Alive.

Later, police took Mercer into custody.

Celeste’s files were released.

The trafficking network collapsed within forty-eight hours.

Seven companies were seized.

Four officials resigned.

Thomas Bell entered witness protection with his family.

Vittorio, confronted with evidence that he had hidden financial crimes but had not participated in the trafficking operation, agreed to step away from family control.

Mrs. Rose was found in a locked guesthouse on Mercer’s property.

Alive.

Bruised.

Furious.

When Dante saw her, he cried.

He did not hide it.

Not from Luca.

Not from Hannah.

Not from anyone.

Three days later, they returned to Westchester.

The mansion felt different.

Not safe.

Maybe it would never be completely safe.

But lighter.

That evening, Hannah found Dante in the greenhouse.

He was repairing the broken glass himself.

She leaned against the door.

“You know there are twenty-three employees on this property.”

He looked at her.

“That might be the most billionaire thing anyone has ever said to me.”

She smiled.

He set down the tool.

“Hannah.”

“Dante.”

He walked toward her.

“I need to tell you something.”

Her heart jumped.

“That sounds ominous.”

“I love you.”

She stopped.

No warning.

No careful setup.

No escape.

Dante Morelli, who spent his life controlling every word, simply said it.

Hannah’s eyes filled.

He looked almost annoyed by his own vulnerability.

“I have been trying not to.”

“That seems healthy.”

“It was unsuccessful.”

“Clearly.”

“I do not expect—”

She kissed him.

He froze for half a second.

Then kissed her back.

When they separated, Hannah whispered, “I love you too.”

Dante closed his eyes.

Relief moved across his face.

Then she added, “You’re still controlling.”

His eyes opened.

“And you’re reckless.”

“Good.”

“Why is that good?”

“Because now we know what we’re working with.”

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

Not an almost-smile.

Not a breath.

A real laugh.

From the doorway, Luca groaned.

“Disgusting.”

They turned.

He stood there with Mrs. Rose.

Mrs. Rose was smiling.

Luca pointed at Dante.

“If you start kissing my tutor all the time, I’m failing math again.”

Hannah said, “Former tutor.”

Dante looked at her.

“You are not leaving?”

She smiled.

“No.”

His expression softened.

May you like

For once, he did not ask for a promise.

And that was how Hannah knew he was finally learning the difference between love and fear.
