Chapter 8 - The Wedding the City Never Expected

The wedding was small.

Nora wanted a garden.

Roman wanted security.

They compromised.

A garden surrounded by discreet guards.

Mia carried flowers.

Elise stood beside Nora.

Tommy wore an uncomfortable suit.

Roman's new business partners attended.

People who had once feared him now shook his hand because they respected what he had done.

Nora walked toward him.

Roman forgot every speech he'd practiced.

“You're beautiful.”

She smiled.

“You look terrified.”

“I am.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Now you know how I felt.”

He laughed.

The ceremony was simple.

No family secrets.

No hidden weapons.

No lies.

When Roman said his vows, his voice cracked.

“I can't promise I will erase the past.”

Nora looked at him.

“But I can promise I'll never make you run from me again.”

She cried.

“I don't need you to be perfect.”

“I know.”

“I need you to be honest.”

“I will.”

Mia clapped.

Everyone laughed.

After the ceremony, Roman took Nora beneath a tree.

“I have something for you.”

A small box.

Inside was the key to the old underground headquarters.

“What am I supposed to do with this?”

“Nothing.”

He closed her hand around it.

“It's yours.”

“Why?”

“To remind you that the place we were afraid of belongs to us now.”

She understood.

The past was no longer controlling them.

They were.

That night, the city celebrated.

News outlets reported the former crime boss had married the woman who had once disappeared from his world.

Nobody knew the full story.

Nobody needed to.

Later, Roman and Nora sat on the balcony.

Mia slept inside.

The city lights flickered.

Nora rested her head against his shoulder.

“I never thought I'd be here.”

“Neither did I.”

“What changed?”

He looked at her.

“You dropped a tray.”

She laughed.

“That was your turning point?”

“Apparently.”

“What a ridiculous love story.”

“The best ones usually are.”

She kissed him.

Then her phone rang.

Nora looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

Roman noticed.

“Who?”

She showed him.

A voicemail from her father.

Impossible.

He had been dead for years.

They played it.

His voice was weak.

“Nora, if you're hearing this, then the Ash Crown failed.”

Roman's face hardened.

The recording continued.

“There is something I never told you.”

Nora gripped his hand.

“The man who organized the Ash Crown was not Victor.”

Roman froze.

“Then who?”

A pause.

Her father's voice whispered:

“Roman's father.”

Nora closed her eyes.

Roman stared into the night.

He had spent his entire life believing his father was dead and buried.

Now the final secret had returned.

His father had created the original organization.

Victor had inherited it.

But why had he done it?

The answer came in the rest of the recording.

“He believed the city could only be controlled through fear.”

“And when Roman grew up, he realized his father was wrong.”

Nora looked at Roman.

“That's why your father wanted you dead.”

Roman shook his head.

“Because I was going to end it.”

The recording ended.

They sat in silence.

Then Nora smiled.

“What?”

“You won.”

Roman frowned.

“How?”

“You became the thing he couldn't control.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“Someone who chose love over fear.”

Roman took her hand.

The final chapter of his father's legacy had ended.

But not the story of their family.

That was just beginning.
