Chapter 7 - The Father Behind the Name

Harper had imagined Lucian’s father as an older version of him.

She was wrong.

Enzo Moretti was shorter, broader, and carried age like armor. His white hair was neatly combed. His tuxedo looked custom-made. His hand did not shake around the gun.

His eyes did not go to Harper first.

They went to Lucian.

“You should have left Matteo buried.”

Lucian did not move.

“So it was you.”

Enzo’s face hardened.

“I protected this family.”

“By killing your son?”

Vittorio laughed quietly.

Enzo turned the gun toward him for half a second.

“Be silent.”

Vittorio spread his hands. “You see? Still giving orders.”

Harper’s heart hammered.

There were three armed men in a narrow corridor, and she had a metal case full of fake documents.

Her fingers found the silver transmitter pin at her waist.

She pressed it twice.

Nothing visible happened.

Good.

Enzo looked at her.

“And this is the girl.”

Harper stiffened.

Lucian moved half a step in front of her.

Enzo noticed.

A cold smile appeared.

“Matteo had the same weakness.”

“What weakness?” Harper asked.

“Believing ordinary people deserve to survive powerful men.”

Harper stared at him.

“That may be the ugliest thing anyone has ever said to me, and I caught my fiancé naked with my cousin this week.”

Lucian made a strangled sound that might have been disbelief.

Even Vittorio blinked.

Enzo did not smile.

“Give me the case.”

Harper lifted it slightly.

“This?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Lucian whispered, “Harper.”

She ignored him.

Enzo’s eyes narrowed.

“You think because Lucian is standing in front of you, you are safe?”

“No.”

“Then why are you smiling?”

Because footsteps were approaching from behind the stage.

Because Gideon had received the signal.

Because Harper had spent years learning how to keep difficult clients looking exactly where she wanted while a contractor fixed the actual problem behind them.

She said, “Because this case doesn’t contain what you think it contains.”

Enzo’s expression changed.

Vittorio looked sharply at her.

Harper continued, “Copies went to federal prosecutors this morning.”

That was only partly true.

The ledgers had.

The decrypted watch data had not, because Kyle still had the watch.

But Enzo did not know that.

“Liar,” he said.

“Maybe.”

Harper tilted her head. “Do you want to shoot your second son in a hotel full of cameras to find out?”

Lucian said very quietly, “You are never negotiating my life again.”

“Then stop standing in front of guns.”

Vittorio suddenly moved.

He slammed Enzo’s arm into the wall.

The gun fired.

The corridor exploded with sound.

Lucian shoved Harper down.

Gideon and two agents rushed in from the far end.

Vittorio struck Enzo again.

Enzo’s gun skidded across the floor.

Lucian kicked it away.

Within seconds, both older men were on the ground with weapons trained on them.

Vittorio was laughing.

Enzo was not.

Then Kyle appeared at the far opening.

He had the watch in one hand and a pistol in the other.

“Harper!”

Lucian turned.

Kyle aimed.

Harper saw the movement before anyone else.

“Lucian!”

The gun fired.

Lucian jerked.

Harper screamed.

He hit the wall and dropped to one knee.

Gideon fired once.

Kyle’s gun flew from his hand as he fell backward, clutching his shoulder.

Agents swarmed him.

Harper was already beside Lucian.

Blood spread across the upper arm of his tuxedo.

“Where are you hit?”

“Arm.”

“Are you sure?”

“I am generally aware of my own anatomy.”

“Not the time to be sarcastic.”

“You started it.”

Her eyes filled.

Lucian saw.

His expression softened.

“Harper. I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“I have been told people survive that.”

She pressed both hands over the wound.

His face tightened.

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

Gideon crouched beside them.

“Through-and-through. Ambulance is coming.”

Harper looked at Kyle.

He was handcuffed, pale with pain, the watch on the floor beside him.

Their eyes met.

“Harper,” he said.

She looked away.

That hurt him more than anger would have.

Sloane was found twelve minutes later in a basement linen room, shaken but unharmed.

The gunfire in the ballroom had come from two of Vittorio’s men trying to reach an exit after security closed in. No guests were killed. Three people suffered minor injuries in the panic.

By midnight, the St. Clair Hotel was surrounded by police vehicles and news vans.

Harper sat beside Lucian in a private hospital room while a doctor stitched his arm.

He watched her from the bed.

“You can go home.”

“I don’t have a home. Mine looks like a tornado learned how to use a knife.”

“The safe house.”

“I’m staying until I know you’re not going to die from being difficult.”

“The doctor says I’m not dying.”

“The doctor has known you for twenty minutes.”

Lucian stared at her.

Then he smiled.

Not the almost-smile.

A real one.

It changed his entire face.

Harper hated how much she liked it.

The doctor finished and left.

Gideon entered carrying a clear evidence bag.

Inside was Matteo’s watch.

“Federal team photographed it. They’ll release it to your attorney for controlled decryption.”

Lucian looked at it for a long moment.

“Six years.”

Gideon nodded.

Harper watched Lucian’s face.

“Are you ready to know?”

“No.”

He reached for the bag anyway.

“But I’m done not knowing.”

The decryption took four hours.

At 4:17 in the morning, Lucian’s attorney opened the first file on a secured laptop.

Matteo’s face appeared on the screen.

Harper’s breath caught.

He was sitting in the same library where Harper had opened the hidden wall.

He looked exhausted.

“If Lucian is watching this,” Matteo said, “then I failed to get out.”

Lucian stopped breathing.

The video continued.

“Our father built the network. Vittorio expanded it. I helped them without understanding what I was helping. When I understood, I tried to stop it.”

Matteo looked directly into the camera.

“Lucian, you are going to want revenge. Don’t.”

Lucian’s face broke.

Not dramatically.

Just a tiny collapse around the eyes.

Harper reached for his hand.

He let her take it.

Matteo continued.

“Revenge is how they keep sons becoming fathers. Evidence is how you end it.”

The room was silent.

Then Matteo said something none of them expected.

“Mara Voss is not the enemy. Her husband died because of us. If she finds this, help her.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Tears spilled down her face.

The video ended with Matteo naming accounts, shell companies, shipping routes, and officials who had been paid to look away.

Enzo was at the center.

Vittorio was beside him.

Kyle’s name appeared only in the final year of records, long after Matteo’s death.

Harper felt Lucian’s hand tighten around hers.

He whispered, “He knew exactly what I would become.”

Harper looked at him.

“No.”

Lucian’s eyes remained on the black screen.

“He knew what you might become.”

Lucian turned toward her.

She squeezed his hand.

“And he left you a choice.”

For the first time since Harper met him, Lucian Moretti looked afraid of something that could not be threatened, bought, or controlled.

He looked afraid of becoming his father.

Harper understood that fear.

Kyle had taught her what happened when love became access.

Enzo had taught Lucian what happened when family became ownership.

She leaned closer.

“Choose differently.”

Lucian looked at their joined hands.

Then back at her.

“I want to.”

A knock came at the door.

Gideon entered with a grim expression.

“What?” Lucian asked.

Gideon placed a phone on the table.

A breaking-news alert filled the screen.

ENZO MORETTI RELEASED PENDING FEDERAL REVIEW AFTER EVIDENCE CHALLENGE.

Harper stared.

“How?”

Lucian’s face went cold again.

Gideon answered.

“One of the federal supervisors handling the case has been on Enzo’s payroll for nine years.”

Lucian stood despite the fresh stitches in his arm.

Harper looked at him.

“Where are you going?”

“To finish this.”

She stepped in front of him.

“No.”

His eyes flashed.

“Harper.”

She held his gaze.

“Matteo just told you exactly what to do.”

“He is walking free.”

“For now.”

“He killed my brother.”

“And if you go after him tonight, he kills your future too.”

Lucian said nothing.

Harper pointed at the laptop.

“Evidence, not revenge.”

The room stayed silent.

Then Lucian sat back down.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Deliberately.

Gideon looked at Harper.

Something like respect passed across his face.

Lucian picked up the phone.

“Call the prosecutor who isn’t compromised.”

Gideon nodded.

Harper exhaled.

Lucian looked at her.

“You realize you are very bossy for a junior designer.”

She stared at him.

May you like

“Promoted twice.”

This time, he laughed.
