Chapter 5 - The Courthouse Bullet

Three weeks later, Claire returned to Chicago.
Not for Alexander.
For herself.
Her doctor had cleared limited travel, the bleeding had resolved, and a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Northwestern wanted to perform a detailed follow-up scan.
Claire was fifteen weeks pregnant.
The baby had survived.
Every time the ultrasound screen flickered with movement, Claire felt a wave of gratitude so fierce it hurt.
Her mother cried at every appointment.
Claire pretended not to.
The preliminary divorce hearing had been scheduled the same week.
Evelyn offered to request remote appearance.
Claire refused.
"I don't want my first time back in Chicago to be me hiding from a screen."
So on a gray Thursday morning, she entered the Daley Center through a private security line wearing a navy coat over a simple cream dress.
Her mother walked beside her.
Evelyn was on the other side.
Two security contractors followed.
Claire had expected reporters.
She had not expected silence.
Alexander had apparently used every legal method available to keep the filing from becoming a spectacle. There were no cameras waiting. No family members crowding the hallway. No Moretti soldiers lining the walls.
Only Matteo stood near the elevators.
He saw Claire and immediately stepped back.
No approach.
No message.
No attempt to block her path.
Claire almost hated how much that mattered.
Then the courtroom door opened.
Alexander walked out with his attorney.
Claire stopped.
Five years collapsed into one hallway.
He looked different.
Not physically thinner, though perhaps he was.
Something else had changed.
The arrogance she had once mistaken for certainty was gone from his posture.
He wore a charcoal suit, no overcoat, no visible weapon, no entourage beyond counsel.
His eyes found hers.
He stopped too.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Claire had imagined this moment every night.
In some versions, she screamed at him.
In others, he fell to his knees.
In the worst ones, she ran into his arms and erased everything because she missed him.
Reality was quieter.
Alexander looked first at her face.
Then, involuntarily, at the slight curve beneath her dress.
His breath caught.
Claire saw it.
His eyes filled before he looked away.
He did not cross the hallway.
He did not say her name.
He simply stepped aside to give her room to pass.
Claire walked by him.
Her heartbeat was so loud she barely heard Evelyn whisper, "You okay?"
"No," Claire said.
Then she kept walking.
Inside the courtroom, Alexander agreed to almost everything.
Temporary separate residences.
No direct contact except emergencies involving the pregnancy.
No use of Moretti personnel to monitor Claire.
Exclusive possession of a condominium Claire selected from marital property.
Independent security chosen by Claire and paid from marital assets.
Separate banking control.
Medical privacy.
When Evelyn requested that Alexander have no authority to select Claire's doctors, his attorney did not object.
The judge looked mildly surprised.
So did Claire.
Then came property.
Alexander's attorney stood.
"Mr. Moretti is prepared to place fifty percent of all clearly marital liquid assets into an independently administered account pending final settlement."
Claire turned toward Alexander.
He did not look at her.
The judge asked, "Mr. Moretti, you understand the significance of this?"
"Yes, Your Honor."
"And you consent?"
"Yes."
The hearing lasted forty-eight minutes.
Five years of marriage reduced to clauses and signatures.
When it ended, Claire felt lighter and devastated at the same time.
Evelyn touched her elbow.
"We can leave through the underground exit."
Claire nodded.
They took a restricted elevator to the lower parking level.
Margaret was talking about lunch when Claire noticed a man near a concrete pillar.
He wore a city maintenance jacket.
Nothing unusual.
Except his shoes.
Black leather dress shoes.
Too clean for maintenance work.
Claire's body recognized danger before her mind did.
She stopped.
One of the security contractors turned.
The man reached inside his jacket.
Everything happened at once.
"Gun!"
Evelyn shoved Margaret behind a parked SUV.
Claire's security man drew his weapon.
The stranger fired.
The sound cracked through the garage.
Claire froze.
A second shot struck concrete near her shoulder.
Then someone hit her from the side.
She fell behind a vehicle, protected by a body over hers.
A third shot.
Return fire.
Tires screeched.
Someone screamed.
Claire smelled blood.
Not hers.
She looked up.
Alexander was on top of her.
His face was inches from hers.
For one stunned second, she could not understand how he was there.
Then she saw the dark stain spreading across his left shoulder.
"Alexander."
His jaw was clenched.
"Stay down."
Another shot struck the SUV.
Matteo shouted from somewhere behind them.
The gunman ran toward a waiting sedan.
Claire's security contractor fired at the tires.
The sedan swerved, clipped a pillar, and stopped hard.
Men moved in.
The garage filled with commands.
Alexander tried to push himself upright.
Claire grabbed his jacket.
"You're bleeding."
"Are you hit?"
"No."
"The baby?"
"I don't know."
Terror flashed across his face.
Claire's hands flew to her stomach.
No pain.
No immediate bleeding.
But memory crashed over her so violently she began to shake.
Alexander saw it.
"Claire. Look at me."
She did.
His voice was low, controlled despite the blood soaking his shirt.
"You're behind the engine block. Stay here. Matteo has the exit. Your security is with you. I'm moving away from you now, okay?"
The words registered slowly.
Moving away.
Not grabbing her.
Not commanding her to follow him.
Not deciding that saving her gave him ownership of the next moment.
He rolled to the side and pressed his right hand over the wound.
Claire stared at him.
"You need an ambulance."
"So do you."
"I'm not shot."
"You were thrown to the ground while pregnant. You're getting checked."
Despite everything, the old Alexander appeared in the sentence.
Claire glared at him.
He winced.
"Sorry. Ask your doctor if you should get checked."
It was such an absurd correction that Claire almost laughed.
Instead she started crying.
Alexander's face broke.
"Don't," he whispered.
"Don't what?"
"Don't cry because of me again."
Paramedics arrived.
The bullet had passed through the upper part of Alexander's shoulder without hitting bone or major vessels.
He refused pain medication until Claire's medical team confirmed a strong fetal heartbeat.
Claire did not know that until Matteo told Evelyn.
She had not asked.
She told herself it did not matter.
It mattered anyway.
At the hospital, Claire sat beside her mother waiting for discharge paperwork.
Her ultrasound had been reassuring.
No new bleeding.
No signs of placental separation.
The baby moved stubbornly through the entire scan.
"Like you," Margaret whispered.
Claire smiled through tears.
Evelyn entered carrying a paper cup of coffee.
"The shooter is alive. Police have him in custody."
Claire looked up.
"Who is he?"
"Known associate of Romano."
Margaret closed her eyes.
Claire's hands curled in her lap.
"Alexander?"
Evelyn watched her carefully.
"Surgery isn't needed. They're cleaning the wound and keeping him overnight."
Claire nodded.
Silence stretched.
Her mother said gently, "You can be grateful he saved you without forgiving him."
Claire looked at her.
"I know."
"And you can still love someone without being safe married to them."
That hurt more.
"I know."
Across the hospital, Alexander woke to find Matteo sitting beside his bed.
"Shooter talked," Matteo said.
Alexander's eyes opened fully.
"Already?"
"He thinks Romano will kill him if we get to him first. Police custody suddenly looks attractive."
"Who gave the courthouse schedule?"
Matteo hesitated.
"Vittorio's former driver. Paid twenty grand."
Alexander's face hardened.
"And Vittorio?"
"Claims he knew nothing about the shooting. I believe him. But the driver had access because Vittorio kept using him after you removed Vittorio from operations."
Alexander stared at the ceiling.
Another consequence.
Another chain beginning inside his own house.
Matteo leaned forward.
"There's more. Romano is getting desperate because the feds froze two of his companies this morning. Sophia is negotiating cooperation. Claire's interview gave them corroboration they didn't have."
Alexander turned his head.
"Claire did that?"
"Partly."
A strange expression crossed Alexander's face.
Pride.
Fear.
Regret.
"She was always smarter than they thought."
Matteo gave him a pointed look.
"Than we thought."
Alexander accepted the correction.
"Yes."
The next morning, Evelyn arrived at Alexander's room with an envelope.
He looked at it warily.
"Another court filing?"
"No."
She placed it on the bedside table.
"Claire asked me to give you this."
His heart jumped despite himself.
He waited until Evelyn left before opening it.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
Alexander,
Thank you for protecting me in the garage.
I mean that sincerely.
But saving my life yesterday does not erase the night you abandoned me while I was hurt. I need you to understand that before either of us confuses gratitude with reconciliation.
I am glad you are alive.
I am glad our baby is alive.
That is all I can give you right now.
Claire
Alexander read it three times.
Then he pressed the paper to his chest.
Not because it promised hope.
It did not.
Because it was the first thing Claire had chosen to say to him since the recorder.
And this time, he understood the difference between receiving a door cracked open and forcing it wider.
He folded the note carefully.
Then he called his attorney.
"Prepare the final settlement terms."
The lawyer hesitated. "We still have months before—"
"Prepare them. Give Claire every protection she requested. No hidden clauses. No control through trusts. No conditions tied to reconciliation."
"Alexander, you're giving up significant leverage."
May you like
Alexander looked at the bandage on his shoulder.
"That's the point."
