Chapter 6 - The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead Came Back to Claim Adrian

Adrian's father was supposed to have died fifteen years ago.
Now the photograph showed him alive.
Not older than expected.
Not sick.
Sitting comfortably beside Julian and Preston's father.
Mave stared at the image.
"How?"
Adrian didn't answer.
They spent the night tracing the photograph.
The location was a private club in Vermont.
Adrian knew it.
His father had taken him there as a child.
The three men had met there before every major transaction.
They drove north at dawn.
Inside the club, a receptionist saw Adrian and immediately called security.
Then the owner appeared.
"Adrian."
His voice was older.
But unmistakable.
Daniel Vale.
Adrian stopped.
His father smiled.
"You've gotten tall."
Adrian's face was empty.
"You're alive."
"Obviously."
"You let me bury you."
"I did."
"Why?"
Daniel sighed.
"Because I had no choice."
Mave watched the father and son.
There was no dramatic embrace.
No tearful reconciliation.
Just seventeen years of anger standing between them.
Daniel looked at Mave.
"So you're the nurse."
Adrian stepped between them.
"Don't."
Daniel smiled.
"Good."
"What?"
"You protect what matters."
Mave frowned.
Daniel continued.
"That's what I wanted."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"You planned all of this."
"Not all."
"The medication theft."
"No."
"The hospital."
"Partly."
"The attacks."
"Julian."
Adrian's fists clenched.
"Then why are you here?"
"Because Julian's operation is collapsing."
Mave stepped forward.
"What is your role?"
Daniel looked at her.
"My role was to stop him."
"You failed."
"Yes."
"People died."
"I know."
"Then why should we trust you?"
"You shouldn't."
That answer surprised her.
Daniel placed a file on the table.
"Trust evidence."
The file contained records of Blackwood Holdings.
A web of shell companies.
At the center was one name.
Celeste Vance.
Preston's mother.
Mave looked at Adrian.
"She's running it."
Daniel nodded.
"Julian built the network."
"Celeste financed it."
"And Preston?"
"Preston was supposed to inherit it."
Adrian looked at the documents.
"What do they want from Mave?"
Daniel answered:
"Her testimony."
Mave went still.
"About what?"
"The original medication fraud began twenty-three years ago."
Mave looked confused.
Daniel continued.
"Your mother was one of the first nurses to report it."
Mave's breath stopped.
"My mother?"
"She worked at Saint Mercy."
"Why didn't I know?"
"Because she disappeared."
"What happened?"
"She went into witness protection."
Mave stared.
"She's alive?"
Daniel nodded.
Tears filled her eyes.
All her life, Mave had believed her mother died in an accident when she was eight.
Another lie.
Another missing woman.
She looked at Adrian.
"I can't do this."
He reached for her hand.
"You don't have to do it alone."
Daniel showed them another document.
An address.
Mave's mother.
Alive.
The truth was becoming bigger than either of them.
They found her in a small town by the coast.
Mave knocked.
The door opened.
A woman with tired eyes stared at her.
Then whispered:
"Margaret."
Mave's mother covered her mouth.
"Mave."
Mave couldn't speak.
She crossed the threshold.
Her mother held her.
For several minutes, neither said anything.
Then Mave pulled away.
"Why?"
Her mother cried.
"Because people were trying to kill you."
"You abandoned me."
"I thought you were safer without me."
"Everyone says that!"
Her mother looked toward Adrian.
"I know."
She invited them inside.
Then she told Mave the truth.
She had discovered that medications were being intentionally altered and redirected.
Her report disappeared.
Her supervisor threatened her.
Daniel Vale tried to help.
Julian tried to kill her.
So Daniel staged her death and sent her into hiding.
Mave cried.
Not just for the years lost.
For the little girl who had waited for a mother who was never coming home.
Adrian stayed nearby.
He did not interrupt.
Later, Margaret took Mave's hand.
"You are exactly like I was."
Mave smiled sadly.
"No."
Her mother frowned.
"I am better."
Margaret laughed through tears.
"Yes."
Back in the city, they prepared for the final confrontation.
Celeste Vance had disappeared.
Preston was hiding.
Julian was moving money overseas.
Daniel offered to testify.
Adrian refused to leave him unprotected.
Mave asked:
"What happens now?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Now we stop running."
She smiled.
"Good."
He took out the antique ring.
The one he had shown her at the restaurant.
"You still have this."
"Of course."
He handed it to her.
"This time, I'm asking when nobody is shooting."
She looked at him.
"Adrian..."
"I know you don't owe me an answer."
He dropped to one knee.
Mave laughed.
"You're doing this again?"
"Yes."
He looked up.
"Marry me."
She stared.
Then smiled.
"Yes."
He slipped the ring onto her finger.
No audience.
No spectacle.
May you like
Just them.
And, for the first time, the decision was entirely hers.
